Karadzic to fight extradition to Holland

Philadelphia News.Net
Wednesday 23rd July, 2008

Radovan Karadzic will try to block his extradition to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

His lawyer has confirmed Mr Karadzic will fight to stay out of the Netherlands for a trial which would see him accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

His lawyer has appealed against the extradition ordered by a Serbian judge.

The European Union has hailed Mr Karadzic's arrest as an important step towards Serbia's accession to the bloc.

But the European Union has told Serbia it must now catch two more high profile war crimes suspects.

Europe wants Serbia to hand over Karadzic's former military commander Ratko Mladic, and Goran Hadzic, a former Serb politician wanted for "ethnic cleansing" in Croatia.

Karadzic was arrested a day before the last EU foreign ministers meeting of the summer and just ahead of the arrival in Belgrade of officials from the International War Crimes Tribunal.
